Montecito Veterinary center is home for feral cat colony cared for daily by a wonderful lady named Clare Hagen. The cats are fed twice daily and those of us that work there do our best to keep an eye on them by making sure there are no noticeable injuries or sickness.  We are pretty familiar with the group that lives out there and know when one is missing or if another one shows up. One day I was leaving work and I noticed this gorgeous grey and white long hair cat. He looked just like a cat I had a few years back that died of old age. I couldn’t believe the resemblance. I could tell by the way he looked and acted that he did not belong to the feral colony. I said hello to him and thought to myself, "he must be lost". The next day I noticed him again. This time I scooped him up and brought him into the clinic to make sure he was ok. He was a little scared but allowed me to give him a good look over. I knew for sure he wasn’t a feral cat and probably belonged to someone close by so I let him go again. I was always worried that he might get hit by a car. A few days went by and I didn’t see him, so I figured someone must have brought him back inside where he belonged.  Another week had passed when I saw him again looking much thinner with a rougher hair coat this time. I thought for sure he must be lost so I picked him up again; gave him food, water, and a nice bed to sleep on.  It began to rain very hard for the next few days and I knew I couldn’t let him back out. I asked Clare if she knew anything about him and she said that she had seen him before but that he had just recently started eating with the feral colony. She agreed he appeared to be lost. Another client of Montecito Veterinary Center lived near by so I asked her if she knew who the cat was. She explained to me he had lived nearby with another cat who would pick on him a lot. The owners had recently moved and left Henry behind. I couldn’t believe a wonderful cat with such a loving personality could just be left behind so I had one of the doctors give him a physical to determine his health and age. We determined he is a neutered male with great teeth, and guessed him to be around two years old. I named him Henry after someone close to me who had passed away. He seems to be grateful every day. He loves to visit with all of his friends, climb on the structures and receive lots of love. His favorite time of day is when a client comes back to visit. He will use his charming personality to warm your heart!

Facility

condosShelley’s Cat Care is designed to help our feline friends feel like they never left home by providing a quiet and relaxed environment. We understand how being away from home can be stressful and will make every effort to give personalized attention with excellent care to help our friends feel safe and comfortable. There are many different condos and exercise pens to choose from. Our cat condos have three different levels to explore with a large separate room for litter box privacy. These condos are great for kitties that need a little time adjusting to their new environment and for those who like to climb and jump. The food and water dishes fit nicely and allow more room for special toys, bedding and blankets. Although we love our dogs, boarding is available for cats only.

We have 2 large spacious exercise pens with tall shelves to climb or scratching posts to exercise and play on. These pens are great for multiple cat families or for those cats that would like to get out and stretch their legs. The cat boarding facility is completely enclosed with a security screen door that is left open during the day for fresh air and sunshine. Many of the regular guests are let out of their rooms to run, play and watch the birds fly by. We have a great climbing post to hang out on or play hide and seek with other friends.Large Exercise Pens

Keeping our guests in a clean environment is one of our top priorities. Each condo or pen is disinfected every day or as often as needed with Nolvasan ® solution designed specifically for animals. All bedding is washed and changed to keep the cats comfortable and dry. Our dishes are cleaned daily and filled with fresh water and food. We use large litter boxes that are easily accessible with plenty of litter. All litter boxes are cleaned out at least twice a day or each time it is used.

Our building is cooled in the summer and heated in the winter. We have special heating pads designed for animals that may have a hard time generating heat or that may be recovering from an illness or surgery.

We encourage owners to come by and see the facility before making arrangements to ensure your cat’s needs are properly taken care of.

You will be filling out a registration form prior to leaving your cat with Shelley’s Cat Care This form will have all of your information as well as important emergency contacts including your veterinarian.
There are Veterinarians in the building should any medical needs arise.
We feed Science Diet ® dry adult food at no extra charge. We are confident an adult cat will do great on this diet. However, if you have your cat on a different diet or if you feed canned food as well, please feel free to bring it along for us to feed at no extra cost to you.

About Shelley

ShelleyPhoto: Ruth Lake ©08
Shelley Nieman was born in Denver Colorado. She has had a natural love of animals her whole life. From a very young age, Shelley had a natural desire to feed, care, and train her family pets. This skill was noticed by children in the neighborhood who brought her all different types of animals who needed care. She moved to California in 1988 and changed from her retail career to veterinary medicine so she could work with animals. Eventually Shelley started her own dog training and boarding business, Sensible Dog Training. Shelley is currently looking forward to starting “Kitty Karten” classes for kittens.

Shelley continues her education by attending classes at the local Junior College and attending yearly veterinary conferences keeping up on veterinary medicine as well as animal behavior. She has worked for Grant W. Patrick DVM at Montecito Veterinary Center for approximately 20 years as a veterinary technician. Her love of animals has turned into a long career of medical care, training and boarding for all types of animals. Her children have grown to appreciate domestic animals as well as all wildlife in the area. She currently has dogs, cats and horses of her own to enjoy. She is very fortunate to have a beautiful home with lots of acreage and a loving husband who understands and tolerates her need to have the animals all around her!
